Wine Tips
When
you walk into a wine store, there are rows & rows of wines awaiting
your discovery. How do you
sort through to make a ‘good’ purchase. Afterall, you can’t taste
the wine in advance (like you can try on a sweater or read a few pages of
a book).
As Sommeliers, it is our job to familiarize ourselves with these wines.
On this page, you will find our wine
tips complete with Sommelier tasting notes & food pairing
suggestions for wines that are readily available at the LCBO.
Those wines marked ‘LCBO Vintages’ are in limited supply, so
shop quickly!

Malbec has
become Argentina’s signature grape variety producing big, bold, full
bodied red wines.
It is not very often that you can find a sparkling wine from
Argentina & more unique is a sparkling wine made with Malbec!
The
Savvy Grapes Tasting Notes: Dry, with loads of red
fruit flavours, this is indeed a full bodied sparkling wine.
Food
Pairing suggestions: Pop the cork & serve chilled before a meal,
with shrimp, sushi or nibble potato chips - a classic sparkling
pairing. Sounds weird? Don't knock it until you try it!

This
one will make you sing! Pinot Noir is often referred by winemakers as,
‘The Prince of Grapes’. It reigns as the quintessential grape with its
elegant aromas & flavours, this grape variety requires constant
nurturing & attention both in the vineyard as well as in the winery.
There are generally two styles of ‘Pinots’; one with earthy
aromas & flavours, the other with red cherry aromas & tastes.
The Savvy Grapes Tasting Notes: This elegant wine
is definitely styled to enhance the cherry aromas and tastes. There is a touch of vanilla (from aging in the barrels), with
a lingering sour cherry finish that goes on forever-r-r-r-r-r!
Food Pairing Suggestions: Classic matches with Pinot Noir is shrimp, grilled
salmon or roasted duck.
Marqués

Tempranillo is considered Spain’s
’national red grape’. Grown
throughout the country, it is the backbone of the wines from Rioja &
Ribera del Duero regions. The
name Tempranillo comes from the Spanish word temprano
meaning ‘early’, reflecting the fact that the grapes ripen earlier
than other varieties.
The Savvy Grapes Tasting Notes: This is made with 90% Tempranillo & a
combination of 10% Graciano & Mazuelo grapes. Aged two years in
American oak, this wine has deep red colour, with aromas of blueberry jam,
earth & spices. The wine has concentrated flavours of fig, raspberry
jam with light tannins & a pleasant heat in the finish.
Food Pairing Suggestions: This is a versatile wine that
would go well with beef satay, classic Spanish
paella, or lamb kebabs. Olé!
